Nokia 7700 Review

Nokia 7700 Unlocked Cellular Phone

There have been rumors floating around the net for a while about a successor to the Nokia Communicator. It was thought that this successor would be released at the Nokia Mobile Internet Conference, which was held today in Nice, France. Unfortunately, such a device was not released. Instead, Nokia has unveiled a new device called the 7700, which is based on their new Series 90 UI for the Symbian OS. The 7700 is a special device in many ways because it has a lot of "firsts" for Nokia, such as a touch screen (640x320 resolution), and the ability to watch TV on it - but we will cover that in more detail later.

Other features of the 7700 include a VGA camera, FM Radio, MMS, EDGE high-speed data, MMC card support, and, of course, the ability to run Symbian OS applications. The 7700 is the first Nokia phone to feature a color touch screen, and what a touch screen it is. It is a high-resolution 640x320 unit with the ability to display images in 65K colors. The landscape format of the screen will allow for enhanced web browsing and playback of large movies. Users will be able to use an on-screen keyboard or handwriting recognition to add entries to their phonebook or calendar, write email messages, or create a document. The screen also features a special partial power mode where only 640x65 pixels are powered, saving energy.

The 7700 comes with 64MB of internal memory (of which about 25MB is available to the user). A 64MB MMC card will also be bundled in the sales package, which can be used to store a variety of different files - from audio and video clips to business documents and more. They can also synchronize the 7700 with their PC using the Nokia PC Suite. We can confirm that Bluetooth with headset support will be available on the 7700.

The well-known Series 60 UI (ie. 7650, 3650) is one of the nicest on the market, and if that is anything to go by, the Series 90 UI should be pretty good too. We can also expect some nice Series 90 applications to start coming to market in the near future.

The 7700 has 3 different modes of operation - normal mode, flight mode, and Offline Mode. Flight mode means that all radio-related activities are turned off, while offline mode lets the user make use of the MP3 player, FM radio, AAC, PIM, and Bluetooth without a SIM card.

Nokia has introduced some new concepts with the 7700, including an enhanced FM Radio mode which sends images, text, and other interactive elements through the network. Another concept is the "Movie Channel", which delivers streamed movie trailers directly to the 7700 on a weekly basis. While these are surely novel, the most interesting new feature in the 7700 is the ability for it to act as a digital TV receiver. Users will be able to attach a special Nokia Streamer accessory to the 7700, which will enable it to receive IP Datacasted TV signals over the DVB-H network. If the last sentence reads like gobbledygook to you, don't worry. Basically, what it means is the the 7700, when attached to a special accessory, will be able to accept a special type of digital TV signal designed specifically for handheld devices.
